Lucy Montgomery lived on a farm near Richmond, Virginia. It was the sumer of 1864. The Civil War had been going on for three years, and the South was losing.
One evening Lucy and her brother Sammy were setting the table for dinner when her father came in from town with a newspaper in his hand and a concerned look on his face. He stood there for a bit and finally said "Grant and his yankees are heading this whay.
sammy dopped the spoon he had been holding,"you mean the bluebellys are coming here?" "Yes" said his father,"They are." Lucy had heard what the yankees did wen they came through. they cut down trees and fences to make room for there tents. To keep warm they'dburn logs, furniture, books, and whatever elsethey could find. they took plantsfrom the garden andallthe animals to feed the men they drove people from their housses so the officers could stay there. It was all around terrible.
"We've got to get out of here," said mama,"And fast."
